Sacramento, CA - The 2013 Launch Festival at Cesar Chavez Plaza last weekend was certainly hot, in more ways than one. The multi-day celebration of music, art, fashion and design turnt-up Sac Town to the 3rd degree with mind blowing music and triple digit weekend temperatures.
Mother Nature made sure to heat things up just for the Launch x Music lineup that showcased international and local acts, culminating Saturday and Sunday respectively with performances from headliners, mashup sensation Girl Talk, and heavy-radio-rotation chart toppers , Imagine Dragons. More on that later, let’s start at the beginning shall we?
The LAUNCH lineup of events kicked-off Wednesday September 4th with the LAUNCH x MARRS: FREE Block Party at 20th between J&K. Featured bands were set up center-stage providing
a bird’s eye view for party goers seated on the LowBrau patio.
The same location reserved for 2nd Saturdays, which is this weekend btw, proved to be the perfect venue for the launch of LAUNCH.
My new Twitter buddy 8th Grader played a great set, DJ Penguin Prison pumped it up and alternative style rockers, New Division from Los Angeles closed the show.
The cardboard architectural structures constructed with help from the Sacramento community created a creative centerpiece for the sidewalk showcase. The cardboard seating was incredibly cute and proved to be extremely sturdy and surprisingly comfortable.
The party continued with a condensed concert Thursday night at Ace of Spades, featuring a mini trio of bands headlined by high-energy Oakland hip-hoppers Wallpaper. They really knew how to get the crowd bouncing off the walls maybe that’s how they got the name, hmm.
Reunited rockers An Angle & Mister Metaphor also graced the stage at Ace of Spades.
Friday night was LAUNCH x Fashion at Tsakopoulos Library downtown.
It was a much bigger venue than the Bank Building last year and the extra space was nicely utilized.
The LAUNCH x Fashion pop-up shop was a popular event addition. Patrons could purchase pieces from several of the showcasing designers including The World of JAS by Joseph Segal of "Project Runway", and slinky yet sophisticated styles from the FROCK LA collection. I even had to get in on the Fashion pop-up shop action. I love, love, love my cat eye ring by World of JAS and I will definitely be rocking my sexy plunge back dress from Frock LA. Although in all honesty for me it will be more of a shirt than a dress. Hey everyone’s not a LAUNCH model.
But my daughter Kareezia is. This year she walked for Ronnie Escalante of the hit show "Fashion Star" and last year she walked it out for Furne One. An image of her in a horse headdress from last year’s showcase was forever memorialized in several of the marketing pieces for this year’s LAUNCH fashion show. Even media and press had her face around their necks. It was pretty darn cool.
Richard Hallmarq of Project Runway made a co-hosting appearance with Chris K from 107.9 The End and designs by Glaudi by Johana Hernandez, Adolfo Sanchez, and Kate Knuvelder also ripped the runway.
LAUNCH x Music at Cesar Chavez Plaza was the talk of the town over the next two days. Check back with CFF for extended coverage of the LAUNCH Music Fest. There was so much to see, do and dance that we decided to put together the LAUNCH Goodstock Documentary to help us tell the story. We’ll keep you posted on release dates for that.
