What I've been predicting has just been announced at the ConsumerElectronics Show ( CES). Intel has unveiled its new WiDi device... orWireless Display Technology. This device, along with Netgear'sPush2TV Adapter, allows an Internet download to be transmitted fromyour computer to your big LCD screen in the living room where you now can enjoy a movie download from the internet with the push of a button. The deviceis a bit pricey right now ( as ALL tech breakthoughs are at theirbeginning) and haven't read reviews of the quality yet... But... And there is the problem for Indy Moviemakers such as myself. Apple TV was a first taste, but it was for Apple... and unfortunately that's still a minor market share. I don't want to have to deal with cable companies for the distribution of my pictures. The cable companies can be as untrustworthy as some LA Distribs. I want control over my own distribution channels via the internet... with DVD quality (not crappy YouTube compression)... and a one-button push access ( or close to it...meaning you don't have to be a techno-geek to get the download). We're not there just yet...but getting closer everyday. Are you preparing your movies for that eventuality? Are you making it part of your Business Marketing Plan? I am.
Wait Frank! I got more news. Devices like that or Apple TV etc have been around for quite some time now...Plus web browsers and netflix being built INTO your TV. But here is one: The cable companies are now starting to experiment with Cable Via internet...which would allow anyone w a internet connection (Satellite, wifi whatever) to watch cable wherever they are. This I suppose may also lead to more ON DEMAN or ALA CARTE type services.
One thing is certain. It's gonna radically change the dynamic of how people can recieve "TV" and possibly the business model for people like Ron and myself whose stations exist primarily from Cable fees. Yikes!
